Michael Fred Phelps was born
30 June 1985 is an American swimmer who has generally won
16 Olympic medals, six gold and
two bronze in
Athens in 2004, and eight gold in
Beijing in
2008. His five gold medals in individual events tied the
single-Games record by
Eric He iden in the
1980 Winter Olympics and equaled by
Vitaly Scherbo 1992 Summer Games.
Phelps won the 200 meter freestyle, 200m back and 100m butterfly. He became the first American swimmer to win three races in three different strokes at a national championship. At the 2003 World Aquatics Championships, Phelps won four gold, two silver medal sand broke five world records.
